General Information

Erasmus+ is the European Union Programme in the fields of Education, Training, Youth and Sport for the period 2021–2027, approved by Regulation (EU) No. 2021/817 of the European Parliament and of the Council. Erasmus+ has been designed to promote and fund opportunities for study, training, work experience, and volunteering abroad. The quality and relevance of European education, training, and youth support systems are enhanced through the Erasmus+ Programme, which supports the improvement of teaching and learning methods, the development of new curricula, and the professional development of teaching staff and youth workers. The Programme also contributes to strengthening cooperation between the education and training sectors and the labour market, in order to address real needs in terms of human and social capital development, both within Europe and beyond.

Why is it important to participate in the Erasmus+ Programme?

The Erasmus+ Programme provides participants with financial support to help cover expenses related to their stay abroad. Furthermore, students participating in the Programme to undertake a mobility period at a host university have the same rights as students enrolled at the host institution. They are exempt from paying tuition fees at the host university (as they regularly pay fees at their home university) and are entitled to receive and use the same services that the university provides to its own students. Finally, upon returning to Italy, the educational activities (examinations, final assessments, etc.) and internships completed abroad are recognised and validated.

Who can participate in the Erasmus+ Programme?

Students regularly enrolled at SSML Nelson Mandela, as well as teaching and non-teaching staff, may participate in the Erasmus+ Programme.

How does the Erasmus+ Programme work?

The Erasmus+ Programme is divided into three main areas, called “Key Actions”.

• Key Action 1 (KA1): Learning Mobility This action concerns: student mobility; Master’s degree mobility; youth mobility; staff mobility.
• Key Action 2 (KA2): Strategic Partnerships This action concerns long-term cooperation between higher education institutions and other public or private organisations active in education, training, and youth sectors. Its objective is to support the development, transfer, and implementation of innovative practices at organisational, institutional, local, regional, national, and European levels.
• Key Action 3 (KA3): Policy Reform This action promotes dialogue between young people and youth policy makers, with the aim of reducing the distance between young citizens and European institutions, harmonising youth policies among Member States, and directly involving young people in decisions that affect them.

SSML Nelson Mandela is particularly committed to Key Action 1 and promotes two types of student mobility: Erasmus+ Study: Student Mobility for Studies Erasmus+ Study offers students the opportunity to undertake a study experience at a partner university abroad of SSML Nelson Mandela. Students may attend lectures and laboratories, take examinations, prepare their thesis, carry out research activities, and participate in other academic activities. Upon returning to Italy, students receive recognition and validation of the activities completed abroad. Erasmus+ Traineeship: Student Mobility for Internship Erasmus+ Traineeship offers students the opportunity to carry out a training internship abroad at various public and private institutions, companies, businesses, training centres, research centres, and other organisations. Students may choose one or both options: a study period abroad may also include an internship period. This combination creates synergies between academic and professional experiences and can be organised in different ways depending on the context: one activity after the other or the two activities carried out simultaneously. In this case, the combination follows the funding rules and the minimum duration requirements established for study mobility. Internships abroad may also be completed within one year after obtaining the degree, provided that the student has agreed upon this mobility with SSML Nelson Mandela before graduating.

SSML Nelson Mandela participates in the Erasmus+ Programme for the seven-year period 2021–2027, as it holds the ECHE (Erasmus Charter for Higher Education). SSML Nelson Mandela has undertaken the commitments established in the ECHE and in the Erasmus Policy Statement.

Participation in the Erasmus+ Study Programme

To benefit from an Erasmus+ Study scholarship, students must participate in the annual selection call published by SSML Nelson Mandela. The call includes: admission requirements; application procedures; participant selection procedures.

Students must submit a Learning Agreement to the Erasmus+ Office of SSML Nelson Mandela, indicating the academic programme and activities to be carried out at the chosen host university. It is essential that the proposed study programme corresponds to or is compatible with the courses offered by the host university and with the student’s own study plan, in order to ensure the effective recognition of credits and activities completed abroad upon return to Italy. For this reason, students are strongly advised to consult the official websites of SSML Nelson Mandela’s partner universities before preparing their Learning Agreement. An Erasmus experience represents an important opportunity for personal and professional growth and should be undertaken with awareness and adequate preparation. To successfully complete examinations at the host university and fully benefit from the experience abroad, students must have an adequate knowledge of the language of the host country and of English.

Classes and examinations are generally held in the language of the host country, unless otherwise specified on the official website of the host university or by the Erasmus+ Office of SSML Nelson Mandela.

The Erasmus scholarship amount is strictly linked to the duration of the academic activities planned for the study period abroad and requires students to obtain a minimum number of credits at the host university. For further details, students may contact the Erasmus+ Office of SSML Nelson Mandela.

Participation in the Erasmus+ Traineeship Programme

To benefit from an Erasmus+ Traineeship scholarship, students must participate in the annual selection call published by SSML Nelson Mandela. The call includes: admission requirements; application procedures; participant selection procedures.

Erasmus+ Traineeship allows students to undertake a training internship abroad lasting at least two months at companies or organisations. The internship may be funded through an Erasmus+ scholarship if carried out during the student’s academic career or within one year after obtaining the degree. In the latter case, students must participate in the selection call and be selected before obtaining their degree.

Host organisations may include: Any public or private organisation active in the labour market or in the fields of education, training, and youth, such as: public or private companies of any size, including social enterprises; local, regional, or national public bodies; social partners or other representatives of the labour market, including chambers of commerce, craft or professional associations, and trade unions; research institutes; foundations; schools, educational institutions, or training centres. Non-profit organisations, associations, or NGOs; Organisations providing career guidance, professional counselling, and information services; Universities or higher education institutions participating in the Erasmus+ Programme and holding the ECHE (European Charter for Higher Education).
